A University of Innsbruck study of over 1,000 adults found a correlation between a preference for bitter tastes, such as black coffee, and personality traits linked to the
“Dark Triad” i.e Machiavellianism, sadism, and psychopathy.
Researchers stress this is not proof that black coffee drinkers are psychopaths, only that such traits may be more common among bitter taste enthusiasts.
Experts suggest the link could stem from a tendency to seek intense or novel experiences, rather than taste alone.
